That word gets used loosely in travel marketing, so here is what it actually means on this route.

The physical demands come from three things working together: altitude, elevation change, and daily distance. The Salkantay Pass sits at 4,630 meters, which is higher than any mountain in Europe, higher than Everest Base Camp, and high enough that the air contains roughly 40 percent less oxygen than at sea level. On Day 2 you gain and then lose more than 2,700 meters of elevation in a single day. On the Express route, that same day covers 28 kilometers. These are real numbers.

What it does not require is technical climbing experience, specialist gear, or a background in mountaineering. The trail is a trail. It is steep in places and the footing can be rough, but there are no ropes, no exposed ridges, and no sections that require anything beyond walking. The people who struggle are almost always underprepared in terms of fitness or acclimatization, not experience.

A reasonable benchmark: if you can comfortably walk for six hours with a daypack on varied terrain, you are physically capable of this trek. If you can do that at altitude after two days in Cusco, you will finish it well.

Fitness Level

Description

Our Assessment

Beginner

Occasional walker, no regular exercise

Not recommended without 8-week preparation

Mäßig

Regular walking, some gym or sport

Manageable with good acclimatization

Good

Hikes regularly, comfortable on hills

Well-suited for the Classic route

Strong

Regular training, endurance background

Well-suited for any route including Express

BEST TIME TO GO

The Salkantay trek runs year-round, but the experience varies significantly depending on when you go.

Dry Season — April to October This is the recommended window and the most popular time to trek. Skies are generally clear, the trail is dry and well-defined, temperatures at altitude are cold but manageable, and the views from the Salkantay Pass are at their most dramatic. May, June, and July are the peak months. Nights are cold throughout this period, particularly at Soraypampa camp, where temperatures regularly drop below zero.

Wet Season — November to March Rain is frequent, sometimes heavy, and the trail can be muddy and more physically demanding as a result. Cloud cover often obscures the views at the pass and on the higher sections. That said, the wet season has its own character. The vegetation is intensely green, waterfalls appear all along the descent, there are significantly fewer trekkers on the trail, and prices are lower. People who do the Salkantay in the wet season often describe it as a completely different and equally valid experience.

February The trail officially closes for maintenance for most of February each year. We do not operate departures during this period.

Month

Weather

Crowds

Preis

Overall

Jan

Wet

Low

Low

Possible with preparation

Feb

Very wet

Closed

—

Closed

Mar

Mixed

Low

Low

Good for budget travelers

Apr

Improving

Mäßig

Mid

Excellent

May

Dry

High

High

Best conditions

Jun

Dry

Sehr hoch

High

Best conditions

Jul

Dry

Sehr hoch

High

Best conditions

Aug

Dry

High

High

Excellent

Sep

Dry

Mäßig

Mid

Excellent

Oct

Variable

Low

Mid

Good

Nov

Wet

Low

Low

Good for the adventurous

Dec

Wet

Low

Low

Possible with preparation

ALTITUDE & ACCLIMATIZATION

Altitude sickness is real and it does not discriminate. Fit, experienced trekkers get it. People who have been to altitude before get it again. Youth is no protection. The only variables that genuinely reduce risk are acclimatization time and how seriously you take it.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most common form. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and disturbed sleep. Mild AMS is common in the first day or two in Cusco and is not usually a cause for concern. Symptoms that worsen rather than improve, or that include loss of coordination or confusion, require immediate descent.

Cusco sits at 3,400 meters. Most people feel some effect of the altitude within the first 24 hours of arrival. This is normal. It is also why we require a minimum of two nights in Cusco before the trek begins. The first day in Cusco should be spent resting and moving slowly. Short walks are fine. Long days of sightseeing and strenuous activity are not.

Practical recommendations for acclimatization in Cusco:

Drink significantly more water than usual. Dehydration and altitude sickness share many symptoms and staying well-hydrated makes a real difference. Eat light meals, particularly in the first 24 hours. Your digestive system slows at altitude and heavy food compounds the discomfort. Avoid alcohol for the first two nights. It accelerates dehydration and disrupts sleep at altitude in a way that compounds the effects of AMS. Sleep is when your body does most of its acclimatization work.

Coca leaf tea is widely available throughout Cusco and the surrounding region and has been used for centuries by Andean communities as a mild aid for altitude symptoms. It is legal in Peru, mildly effective at reducing mild AMS symptoms, and worth drinking regularly during your first days. It is not a substitute for proper acclimatization time.

Diamox (acetazolamide) is a prescription medication that accelerates acclimatization by stimulating faster breathing. It is effective and widely used by trekkers. If you are considering it, consult your doctor before traveling and begin taking it 24 hours before ascending to significant altitude.

WHAT TO PACK

The daypack you carry on the trail should weigh no more than 6 to 8 kilos. Everything else goes in your main bag and is carried by the porters. Pack your daypack the night before each day and leave everything non-essential in the main bag.

Clothing

Bring a warm insulated jacket rated for below-zero temperatures. A fleece midlayer. A waterproof shell that fits over both. Two or three moisture-wicking base layers. Trekking trousers, not jeans. Warm hat and gloves for the pass crossing. Lightweight gloves and sun hat for the lower sections. Gaiters if you have them, particularly for the wet season. Comfortable shoes or sandals for camp in the evenings.

The single most common packing mistake is underestimating the cold at altitude and overestimating the need for clothing at lower elevations. The pass at 4,630 meters in the early morning is genuinely cold. By Day 3 in Santa Teresa you will be walking in 25-degree heat. Pack for both.

Gear

A sleeping bag rated to at least minus 10 degrees Celsius. This is the single most important item and the one most people underestimate. Available for rent in Cusco. Trekking poles, which make a significant difference on the Salkantay Pass descent. Headlamp with fresh batteries for the predawn start on Day 2. Sunscreen rated at least SPF 50 — ultraviolet radiation is significantly stronger at altitude than at sea level. Sunglasses with UV protection. A water bottle or hydration bladder with a minimum 2-liter capacity.

Medical and personal

Personal prescription medications with extra supply. Blister plasters and basic first aid for minor trail injuries. Altitude medication if recommended by your doctor. Hand sanitizer. Lip balm with SPF. Wet wipes for days when water is limited. A small dry bag or waterproof cover for electronics.

Documents

Passport, which is required for entry to Machu Picchu. A physical copy of your booking confirmation. Travel insurance documents with the emergency contact number written separately from your phone.

TRAINING TIPS

Eight weeks of consistent preparation makes a significant difference on this trek. You do not need to be an athlete. You need to be someone who has spent the previous two months walking uphill with a pack on their back.

Weeks 1 and 2 — Build the base Three walks per week, one to two hours each on relatively flat terrain. The goal is consistency and building the habit, not intensity. Focus on footwear — use the same boots you will wear on the trek and identify any fitting issues before they become blisters.

Weeks 3 and 4 — Add elevation Increase to three to four sessions per week and introduce hills. Stairs and inclines are more valuable than flat distance at this stage. Add a light pack, five to six kilos, and keep it on for the full duration of each session.

Weeks 5 and 6 — Build endurance At least one long walk per week of five to six hours on varied terrain. Keep the shorter sessions going through the week. This is the most important phase and the one most people cut short when life gets busy. Don’t.

Weeks 7 and 8 — Consolidate and taper Maintain the training load but reduce the intensity slightly in the final week before departure. Your body needs time to absorb the training before the trek begins. Arriving tired and sore is worse than arriving slightly undertrained.

Cross-training — cycling, swimming, and stair climbing all build the cardiovascular base that altitude demands. Yoga and stretching reduce injury risk significantly on multi-day treks. If you have access to a gym with a StairMaster, use it.

PERMITS & REGULATIONS

Machu Picchu entrance requires a timed ticket purchased in advance. Walk-in tickets at the gate are no longer available. Tickets are linked to your passport number and cannot be transferred. We purchase all Machu Picchu tickets on your behalf as part of your trek package.

The Salkantay trail itself does not require a permit beyond the Machu Picchu entrance ticket. Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, which has a strict daily quota of 500 trekkers and books out months in advance, the Salkantay route is open access. There is no booking window and no permit process for the trail itself.

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain each require a separate additional ticket purchased at the same time as the citadel entrance. These tickets are strictly limited and sell out weeks or months in advance during high season. If you want either of these, tell us at the time of booking.

Photography and conduct at Machu Picchu — commercial photography and filming require advance permits from the Ministry of Culture.
